Del Aire Park Update

The staff at Del Aire Park has implemented a monthly community meeting which will be held every 2nd Wednesday of the month. The purpose of this meeting is to establish stronger ties with the community through dialogue and to provide updates on park program's and activities.

The first monthly community meeting was held on Wednesday, Nov. 9th. below is a synopsis of what was discussed:

Previous issues/discussions - At past community meetings inadequate lighting and lack of signs at the park was discussed. It is still a major area of concern and is still being evaluated by Parks and Rec administration. There has been some improvements made, but it is strongly recommended by the community members present that further improvements need to be made in this area. i.e. better lighting between all structures and the parking area. Signs posted in conspicuous areas delineating park rules, which include "No amplified sound”.

Also, a survey is still in the works. This survey will be distributed to all community members as a means of identifying the communities needs and wants in regard to programs at Del Aire Park.
"Eagle Eye Program"- a pilot program, similar to a community watch program, but more specific to the park surroundings is being evaluated by the Dept. of Parks & Rec. This particular program is being implemented and evaluated in a couple of out of state communities and is being looked at here. More information should be available soon.

"Weekly Report"- the staff at the park is charged with forwarding a weekly report which includes all illicit activity that is witnessed at the park and any time the Police are called.

"Site Supervisor" - There is funding available for a "Site Supervisor" position at the park. This position is in addition to the Recreation Supervisor and is responsible for overseeing the park activities and grounds during business hours. This position has been filled and will implemented at the park soon.

Upcoming Events/programs

There are quite a few one day events (seasonal) and upcoming continuous programs in the works. These include:

"Snow Day at the Park"- December 16th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. For this event, snow will be shipped into the park for a day of fun in the snow. It was stated that school is out for this day.

"Family Night"- December 16th is also the first "Family Night" event. This will consist of activities, refreshments and a movie for local community members to come and enjoy. This sounds like a great opportunity for community members to get together and get to know each other better. This program will initially start out as a weekly program and then be evaluated (depending on attendance levels) as to whether it should be biweekly or monthly.

"Teen Program"- A drop-in type program for teens is being developed and will be implemented soon. This program will include activities, sports and tutoring. The park staff would like to get community involvement, in the form of volunteers, in on this program. It is anticipated to start in December, it will run Mon-Fri from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
